Sonoran Desert Bloom

A Springtime hike through the Sonoran Desert in Tucson, AZ inspired this cactus creation. This cactus is comprised of 3 pieces. For each piece, the dyed cane is plaited in a twill pattern around stainless steel cable ties. Each piece is finished with several rows of twined wire.

My woven forms reflect my philosophy - Life is an adventure. Whether hiking in the forest, the desert or a dormant volcano, these experiences are woven into the walls of my baskets. My palette of fibers consists of black ash, wire, cedar, paper, birch bark, steel cable, waxed linen, grapevine and even cereal boxes. My creations of wearable art can be seen in the book Making the New Baskets - Alternative Materials, Simple Techniques.
