Connections. At a simplistic level, basketry is the result of connecting natural or man-made materials together. However, I would argue that it is much more than simply weaving materials together to create a functional or nonfunctional item. To me, basketry connects me to the past, present, and future. I have a family connection to basketry and recently learned that my great grandfather had a willow basketry business in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s in Liverpool, New York. Today, each time I take a class, I make connections not only to new techniques, but to also to others who shape the direction of my future ideas and direction.
