Copper Star

Madweave using copper strips. Strips are textured by sandwiching the copper between layers of Tulle and running it through a rolling mill. Some strips are then flame painted with an Oxy-Acetylene torch. Other strips are dipped in dog shampoo, which has Sulphur in it, to add a black patina.

My baskets are a celebration of the beauty of mathematics in the physical world. Patterns promote peace and a grounded-ness because they are predictable. Yet complex patterns are also surprising, causing the viewer to question their assumptions and begin to see things in new ways. The triaxial weave used in my baskets utilizes three directions of weaving rather than the typical two directions. This provides unusual patterns on the baskets, yet the patterns are pleasant and feel correct. The optical illusion of three-dimensional cubes in the tumbling block pattern adds particular interest to many of the baskets. My ribbon baskets provide an intriguing spectacle of color, while elegance combines with fascination in my copper baskets. I hope that my art will encourage people to allow their curiosity to increase their appreciation of the beauty of patterns.
