Stupa

Natural shapes, patterns, and materials are at the heart of my work. My preferred medium is black ash splint, which I prepare according to the traditions learned from a Potawatomi elder in the 1980s. The loss of ash in our forests brought other fibers into my work, such as Longleaf Pine needles, willow, agave, palm leaf, twisted vines, and gnarly branches. Whether functional or form-based, my weavings employ finework techniques and meticulous stitching. My work has been featured in galleries, exhibitions, books, documentaries, and a larger-than-life billboard. I presented a seminar on split woven basketry at the Epcot International Festival of the Arts and recently manipulated living vines into a temporal Art in the Park installation.
