Basketry at the Kikuchi Kanjitsu Memorial Tomo Museum

Press Release Announcing the Sekijima Hisako Exhibition from the Kikuchi Foundation:

“May 13th, 2026

TOKYO–We are pleased to announce an upcoming solo exhibition featuring Japanese basketry artist, Sekijima Hisako (b. 1944) at the Kikuchi Kanjitsu Memorial Tomo Museum in Tokyo, Japan, from November 2026. Please find the attached PDF press release for your reference.

Approaching basketry from an analytical perspective, Sekijima Hisako explores the structural principles of interlacing, specifically of material, construction method, and form. Her works are filled with the sense of wonder that accompanies discovery and allow viewers to experience the joy of thinking itself.

A few highlights of the artist’s career include:

  • After moving to New York, USA in the 1970s, she was immersed in the attitudes towards American crafts -an attitude of re-examining traditional techniques and transforming them into expressive tools.
  •  Upon returning to Japan, she examined the Japanese Folk tools. This led her to analyze baskets from around the world, further deepening her understanding of the principles of basketry.
  • Her works are held in public collections including
    • In the USA: The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston / Racine Art Museum, WI / Arkansas Arts Center, AR / LongHouse Reserve, NY,
    • In the UK: Victoria and Albert Museum, London,
    • In Japan: The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo / The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama / Yokohama Museum of Art

This exhibition also marks a renewed collaboration with the artist following a two-person exhibition at Tomo Museum in 2014 and features new works. While our museum primarily focuses on presenting ceramics artwork, we also occasionally present exhibitions in other fields of contemporary art in order to reobserve ceramic art from a broader perspective.”
