Baskets are meant to hold something, to carry or contain. Their form—whether berry basket or prayer basket—is determined by what needs holding and who is holding it. I am interested in making objects that people can use; baskets that hold the items, or contain the ideas, we wish to carry with us. I make both sculptural and functional baskets from wild-harvested basketry plants, as well as post-consumer materials. I gather or scavenge nearly all my materials from my surroundings and, in doing so, honor the traditions taught to me by my mentors: to gather according to the rules of reciprocity with the land, and with respect for the generations of basketmakers who came before and all those who will come after.
