Removed Restricted Resurfaced

Plaited, Looping, Random Overlay.

Woven with hand painted paper with written words on the weavers. The words are part of the nearly 200 words removed from the government’s websites since the beginning of the new administration. Even if the words are not fully readable, they are forever imbedded into the vessel. Further concealing the words, is a layer of looping. A third layer randomly woven through the loops consisting of strips of paper inscribed with the vanishing words. This arrangement suggests that although words can be removed and restricted, their essence cannot be truly erased. The vessel invites viewers to reflect on the impact of censorshipand the importance of preserving open, inclusive dialogue in society.

My contemporary woven sculptures express personal thoughts and emotions. My intention is to engage the viewer. From first impressions, I hope they will linger — look closely — and explore the multiple layers and meanings in my work. Ultimately, I hope they will discover the idea, opinion or feeling that inspired each work. My sculptures whether in vessel form or not are all made with basketry techniques.
