Lucky Bamboo Pagoda

In Feng Shui, the Lucky Bamboo houseplant symbolizes good fortune, resilience and positive energy. This piece utilizes twining and knotting waxed linen thread to create a multi-level structure capturing those elements deeply rooted in Asian culture through the use of color, patterns, and layers of unraveled thread. Each thread functions differently throughout the piece, repeatedly exposing spokes, interchanging spokes to weavers and cores to knotters in order to create variations throughout. Inspired by architectural features of ancient Chinese pagodas, Lucky Bamboo Pagoda is part of The Woven Pagoda Series.

My explorations in basketry are inspired by love of architecture and design, travel adventures around the country and abroad, and respect for my cultural heritage. As a lifelong learner, I enjoy experimenting with a wide variety of materials and techniques, the process of weaving energizes me, especially when twining with waxed linen thread. The process is meditative, focused by patience and precision to generate innovative designs. My goal is to create handcrafted art that arouses calm and joyful feelings while being rooted in wisdom from the past and open to the beauty of the present.
