Ply-splitting is my portable technique. Instead of elements moving over and under or around each other, in ply-splitting elements move through each other. Resulting pieces are dense, durable, and lend themselves to sculptural effects. 4-ply cords are required, which I design and make myself. Motifs from the ancient Peruvians of the Paracas region inspire much of my work. The Peruvians made beautiful textiles in a twining technique, which I found I could translate into ply-splitting. I enjoy the challenge of replicating these ornate motifs in non-traditional colors, because I am an avid puzzle solver.
