NBO wishes to congratulate member Cathryn Peters on a successful solo exhibition, From Traditional Basketry to Contemporary Antler Art.
From Traditional Basketry to Contemporary Antler Art is on view at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin until April 12. If you are in the area, now is your last chance to see this wonderful show.
Peters creates a range of pedestal-style, wall art, and functional antler basket sculptures using deer, elk, fallow, moose, and caribou antlers. The antlers are combined with hand-gathered natural materialssuch as; willow, red dogwood, cattails, and commercially sourced rattan reeds. Much of her work draws on traditional rib-style basketry techniques and wicker repair, with the antler serving as an important element in each piece, either as the focal point or as the handle.
Cathryn’s exhibit at The Phipps reflects both the ancient craft of basketweaving and a contemporary sculptural approach. Peters describes the process as a grounding and spiritual journey, with each antler basket sculpture guided by the natural form and energy of the antler itself. Whispering its final design and purpose.
