Positive Negative: Generosity vs Greed and Responsibility vs Entitlement

This was bead tapestry crocheted with two black, two red, and two green threads (each loaded with black, red, or green beads). Switching them back and forth while placing a bead behind each stitch created contrasting imagery on the inside and outside. Black and green beads along the rim spell out CV2022 in binary. Carried threads and tight stitches produced the thick fabric.
Brilliant green beads on the inside represent growth, while drab green thread on the outside symbolizes money. Greedy, entitled people are never satisfied. Accumulating more and more at whatever cost doesn’t bring lasting happiness (symbolized by the zigzags below the dollar signs) and this behavior is destroying the planet.

Patterned shoulder bags tapestry crocheted by Mayan men in Guatemala in the 1970’s inspired Carol Ventura to not only research this medium, but also to begin exploring the design possibilities. This fiber art is like regular crochet, except that one or more threads are carried while another is crocheted. Bead tapestry crochet is done with two or more strands, each loaded with one bead color. Switching them back and forth while placing a bead behind each stitch creates the imagery. Carol’s work has been widely published and exhibited. Recent pieces have been inspired by the Me Too movement, the crisis of disinformation, the rejection of science, the politicization of Covid-19, and greed. Her web site at https://www.tapestrycrochet.com includes links to tutorials and patterns and the blog at www.tapestrycrochet.com/blog features “. . . the rest of the story.”
