North House Folk School
500 Highway 61 West
This course is an introduction to the qualities of the ash tree, used for both weaving the basket and making the handles. Through scraping and cutting, students will prepare the splint to create a basket measuring approximately 11″x 6″ x 6″. Working with shave horse and drawknife, students will then bend a freshly harvested ash handle to insert into the basket, bringing the overall height to approx. 12”. Students will be exposed to cutting splints with scissors and slitting gauges, weaving a continuous weave basket, knife work and green wood bending.
