Sargeant Major

The coiled basket is constructed by wrapping one waxed linen thread around a core that contains all the colors to be used. Color changes involve exchanging one wrapping cord for another to create intricate patterns. The cloth ball head is supported inside the waxed linen basket by anchoring the cloth thru cardboard tubes and pulling it up around the outside, to sew to the neck. The mask is coiled separately and sewn to the soft head, with wool felt details also stitched separately.
Materials: Coiled basket and mask of waxed linen; soft sculpture including Recycled Materials: 2 cardboard tubes from an adding machine, linen cloth from old pants, handmade wool felt scraps; New Materials: cotton and synthetic sewing thread, waxed linen.

Jackie Thomas is a Fibers Artist. So, touch is an important aspect of her work. She often designs a piece with the intention that people will want to reach into it to experience the texture and form. As a fibers artist for more than 50 years, she has worked most often with fabrics, yarns, fleece, and beads to create wall hangings, sculptural forms, dolls, fetishes, vessels, and jewelry. There are several themes that drive her work: miniatures; environment sculptures; incorporation and exploration of “recycled” materials (“found objects”); responses to events; places; things; philosophical dilemmas; serendipity and whimsey .
