Pandemic Initiator

Crossed tab base, reverse twining, overhand knot
Waxed linen thread. Recycled muselet
This work represents the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes the disease COVID-19. From early 2020 the world battled the pandemic caused by the airborne virus and now has set up ideal conditions for the virus to mutate, evade vaccines and previous infection immunity. Still people around the world are dying from this virus but the world does not want to know.
The technique was learned via Zoom (post-lockdowns) from American weaver Cael Chappell.
The display stand is a muselet (wire cage that fits over the cork of a champagne bottle). Celebrations involving sparkling wine are often virus ‘super spreader’ events.

Exploring different basketry techniques and materials drives me. From natural materials to manufactured threads to recycling ‘rubbish’, all provide inspiration for basketmaking. Collecting and foraging for materials in nature shines a different light on the plants in my local neighbourhood. Collecting plant materials brings the seasons into focus. The subsequent transformation of the material into an artwork is a truly satisfying process. To have someone fall in love with your work, and buy it, is an amazing reward for the hours involved in creating an artwork. The meditative rhythm of weaving is soothing for the soul in these unsettling times.
