Meditation for Monarchs and Mom

Milkweed pods were gathered locally and coated with Fabric Sculpture Medium to seal and preserve. The edge of each pod was then outlined using waxed linen, a sharp needle and the buttonhole stitch. I then joined the pods to each other through this stitching to form a large arc shaped plane which was eventually bent and joined to form the cone shaped walls of the vessel. I filled the voids between the pods with knotless netting. Found objects (rings) filled with fine copper wire netting create the focal point. The piece is weighted on the interior with a ceramic bowl thrown by my mom, and a bronze casting of my mom’s prolific artist’s hand.

The natural world has always been my primary muse and source of materials that I juxtapose with human-made objects. I have come to view discarded/found objects as symbolic of our humans and our consumer culture. I try to combine natural and found materials in such a way that each and every material/object retains a sacredness I believe each possesses. The term "reciprocity", the idea of the interdependence of humans and nature and how working together for the betterment of each other, seems the perfect conceptual framework for the work I have been creating for decades.
