I have been exploring the possibilities of ply-splitting as a basketry technique since 1998. Ply-split braiding is a unique textile technique in which cords are pulled through other cords to create flat or three-dimensional objects. I make most of my own cords from cotton or paper ribbon. A few years ago, I learned about climate scientist Ed Hawkins’ powerful Climate Stripes, which provide "a simple visual representation of the long-term rise in global temperatures due to human-caused climate change", with stripe colors changing from shades of blue to shades of orange and red. I started experimenting with variations of these colors in my cordmaking and ply-splitting, and found that the meditative process of making beautiful ply-split baskets in these colors, and with this theme, helps me manage my alarm and anguish about global climate destabilization.
