Katie Shulman is an artist, organizer, arts administrator and educator from Washington, DC. She lives, makes art and builds community in Detroit, Michigan. Katie holds an MFA in Studio Art from Syracuse University and a BFA in Fine Art from The Penny W. Stamps School at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Her work has been shown nationally including at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, NY, The Strohl Art Gallery in Chautauqua, NY, I.M Weiss Gallery and Reyes|Finn in Detroit, Michigan.
Katie’s fiber sculptures are relics of small dances between herself and her material partners. They are ossified objects constructed through a sequence of liberating movements born from her obsession with productivity mixed with an appetite for discovery.
In 2022 Katie founded Fiber Club*, a network of artists and creative practitioners working in Southeast Michigan. Along with a monthly meeting, Fiber Club* has organized two group shows for Detroit Month of Design and partnered with local organizations and institutions including Buffalo Prescott, The Shepherd and Michigan Medicine to collaborate on arts programing and additional exhibitions.
In addition to her art and organizing practices, Katie has an over ten-year career as an arts administrator. She has worked in various institutions of higher learning and nonprofit education spaces like The 92nd Y, The Studio Institute, Hunter College and Design for America.
She has taught at The 92nd Street Y, Syracuse University, College for Creative Studies, The Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design where she currently works in Alumni Relations.
