NBO’s Wednesday’s Video In this week’s vid NBO’s Wednesday’s Video

In this week’s video, My Father's Tools and the Indigenous art of basket weaving, we see Stephen Jerome’s focused crafting process, both a tribute and a connection to his dad, in a wordless short film by Heather Condo in collaboration with Wapikoni Mobile.

"From finding a bendable Black Ash tree in the forest—"He chooses the specific log based on soil, smell, and even the sound of the tree when you bang on it.”—to chopping, preparing, and refining it for weaving, Stephen Jerome handcrafts baskets, a traditional Indigenous art that he learned from his late father.”

#TraditionalCraftTuesday What an incredible basket #TraditionalCraftTuesday What an incredible basket!
If you aren’t already following @clarkemuseum we encourage you to start now, and watch for their weekly Basket of the Day posts!

Posted @withregram • @clarkemuseum Basket of the Day – Yurok Twined Pedestal Perhcherkws (Basket) with Lid

Made of haamoh (beargrass), raak nee ye'y (maidenhair fern), 'wohpeg (spruce root), and holeehl (hazel sticks), this gorgeous basket was made circa pre-1900. The design is Snake's Nose with Obsidian Blade. Very fine, even weave. The lid has a knob handle and the design on the button is also on the inside of the basket.

Circa pre-1900 and originally thought to be made by Nettie Ruben (incorrect, per Ron Johnson), it has since been attributed to Carrie Jim as per Lila O’Neale. It’s considered one of the finest baskets in the Hover Collection.

NBO’s Wednesday’s Video This week’s video, NBO’s Wednesday’s Video

This week’s video, "The Art of Basket Weaving,” was produced by KCET as an episode of their Artbound series.

"Native American basketry has long been viewed as a community craft, yet the artistic quality and value of these baskets are on par with other fine art. Now Native peoples across the country are revitalizing basketry traditions and the country looks to California as a leader in basket weaving revitalization. There has been a revival in traditional basket weaving, thanks to the work of the California Indian Basketweavers Association (CIBA), which was founded in 1992 under the slogan “keeping the tradition alive.” This episode was made in partnership with the Autry Museum of the American West and CIBA.”
